What is the best topic for my thesis on project management???

Friday, August 13th, 2010

I’m a building surveying student. I’m doing my final year thesis and now having problem to decide the topic. I’ve narrowed down to a few ideas include project organizational factor, time management, and cost management. Which one would be better topic for a thesis? or any better suggestions?

How about, "How did the world manage before project management was invented"?

Unlike yourself (I’m sure) most project managers know sweet about construction, let alone architectural design, and often turn out to be the weakest link in the project (although it is a competition between them and the M& E engineers). They tend to engender the blame culture and quite frankly in many cases are another overhead to add to the (already inflated) cost of building today. The biggest failing is not managing the clients’ expectatioins – they are employed by the client and so usually end up telling them what they want to hear. The design team have a duty of care and are bound to tell it how it is.

You seem to have overlooked ‘quality’ in your assessment – any project is a function of time, cost and quality – usually one is at the expense of the others. Maybe you could try some case studies to see how the process works?

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

I want to use matlab in my work but i could not find how to use one of the tools that I’m looking for is like the Microsoft project management software i need to enter a list of project tasks and a duration time of each one and measure the project time duration and the critical path method so how i have to use the Matlab software i got the 7.5v do i need to install any thing else.

Regards,,,

I am not aware of anyone using Matlab as a project management tools. There are a lot of better options out there for this, even a basic spreadsheet. You could of course build something like this in Matlab, but that seems like a lot of work to fit a square peg in a round hole.

I’m looking for the website of Time Work Bench (TWB). They supposedly provide project management tools.?

Or if you could recommend other Time Monitoring tools aside from Dovico.

Not heard of that tool. There used to be a product called Project Manager Workbench, that was bought by niku (http://www.niku.com), who then became Computer Associates Clarity, and I understand that Open Workbench http://www.openworkbench.org/index.php is now an open source product based on the original PMW.

The link belows is to a list of project management tools.

I can help you with the colleges offering distance MBA programs but not sure of the colleges that offer courses in project management. You can refine the results as per your requirements.

I’m a BE grad working as a Tech Project Manager.Any suitable flexi time or work from home options available?

Have 2 years of project management experience, one year of which is technical. Overall 6 years experience, residing in Bangalore.

You need to send your resume out to real jobs you are qualified to do.

In your cover letter you need to state that you wish to work remotely, from your home office. LOTS of companies, especially in CA operate this way. They usually provide transportation for you to come in for an interview and for you to attend company meetings a few times a year, but otherwise everything is done online.

Is a Masters in Engineering Management worth the time and effort?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

I currently only have a BS in management and some Auto-cad Drafting classes under my belt. I was thinking of getting a Masters in EngMgt, majoring in project management or Lean Manufacturing. My company has a tuition reimbursement program.

Management degrees for Engineers are worthwhile if they are part-time and paid for by the employer.

Normally, only Engineers with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering are eligible for a Master’s in Engineering Management.

There are so-called MSIT degrees in Industrial Technology (or MSIM—Industrial Management), which do not require an Engineering Bachelor’s. These degrees are offered by schools accredited by NAIT/ATMAE.

Where is the best place to find a free project management spreadsheet?

I have a list of projects that would choke an elephant. I am looking for a simple, free management tool to simplify and organize the key points, time-lines and milestones of these projects.

Try:

http://www.basecamphq.com/

You’ll love it. It’s an online web project portal, which makes collaboration easy. You can post messages, share files, "to-dos", "writeboards", and milestones too.
