I’m a student at Kaplan University as of now but I’m beginning to second guess their project management courses. I’m studying to get my bachelors in business administration with a concentration in project management. I have recently found that this program is not accredited by PMI (project management institute), therefore I’m wondering if there is a more qualified program to prepare me for the CAPM (certified associate in project management) certification.

I wouldn’t worry too much whether your Kaplan program is accredited by PMI or not. Not a lot of programs are, and you’re not required to take an accredited program to qualify to sit for the CAPM exam.

However, does your program make use of PMI’s PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge)? If not, then it’s not helping you much towards your CAPM, even though it may still be a reasonable program. (However, project management is not an area that lends itself well to online training.)

Even if it does use the PMBOK, it’s unlikely to study the PMBOK to the level of detail, and in the correct manner, for the CAPM exam. I would suggest a dedicated CAPM prep course – which is specifically targeted at getting you ready for the CAPM exam. An in-person course would be best, but you can probably find something online.

I am looking at taking a Master’s Program from a regionally accredited university (Boston University) in Project Management. It would be a Master’s of Science in project management as the full title. It’s not an ‘MBA’ but it does have similar subject matter within it’s curriculum. It costs $38,000 in comparison to nearly $50K for an MBA. My question is – Is it worth it? Would this be looked upon favorablyby a potential employer.

Ask yourself this. You need somebody to manage a multi-million dollar project. Would you hire somebody who got their degree on-line?
