Is PRINCE2 suitable for me?

I want to study for a project management qualification. I am quite new to project management – only managing my first project now, and I am not a top manager or anything. Is PRINCE2 suitable for me, or is only suitable for people with lots of project management experience?

PRINCE stands for PRojects IN a Controlled Environment and there are two levels of certification. The beginning level is called ‘foundation’ which is suitable for project administrators, those working in a project environment, and managers of small projects. Second type of certification is the ‘practitioner’ and this is well suited for project managers who are running medium to large size projects. However there are no strict requirements about experience, education, or size of project that determines what type of certification is suited to you. This means the decision is entirely up to based on what you feel you need.

Basically, the way testing for PRINCE 2 testing is done, you first have to pass the foundation test which is a multiple choice test and must pass it before you can sit the practitioner exam. Practitioner exam, is a scenario based exam in which you write a response. Both exams are based on the "textbook" which is published by the OGC documenting Prince2. Rules regarding how long you have to wait after taking your foundation before taking the practitioner test does not exist. I have seen authorized testing centers and authorized training providers that allow you to take both tests on the same day. Should you pass the exam the question becomes how long each certificate is valid? I believe the foundation certificate in valid indefinitely and the practitioner I believe is only valid for five year.

With that said, I know in the UK you can self-study for the practitioner exam and the foundation exam. Self-studying means you can study on your own and take the test from an authorized testing center. The cost of self-study is a fraction of what it would cost if you went to a class. Finally in answer to your question, I feel the foundation certificate would be worth your time and then once you gain some more experience then taking the practitioner exam would be worth it.

Are courses for myself as self-employed tax deductible?

I am currently working as a Project Manager and invoicing for my services. Recently, I have purchased a Prince2 course to gain a recognised qualification in project management and was wondering if this is potentially tax deductible?

The leading case on this is Dass v. R & C Commissioners in which it was specifically held that the cost of acquiring a new qualification is capital expenditure and is therefore not tax deductible against income. If the reason for doing the course is to improve your prospects of selling your services by being able to demonstrate a qualification to potential employers then the expenditure was incurred in order to enhance the goodwill of your business and the decision in Dass v. R & C Commissioners applies. However, it rather depends on your existing level of expertise. It might be worth trying the line that the course is merely intended to update your existing skills and the qualification at the end is purely incidental to the main purpose of undertaking the course.

pharma biotech career question?

hiya!!

i’m a final year student studying biological science at the university of hertfordshire.

i have one years experience working for a pharma/biotech company working in the data management sector and by the time i graduate i will have another years experience working as a laboratory technician.
therefore, i will have a degree and two years experience behind me. i decided to gain all this experience because i’m seeing through my peers its hard to get jobs without experience especially as its a recession.

in a few years time i would like to be a project manager, however i do not want it to stop there. i was wondering if anyone knew of a role above project management? i know obviously senior project management but any other high paying pharma / biotech role (above 60k?)???

also, after i graduate i’m wondering what role i should be looking for?, because i will have two years experience and a degree i should be able to apply for jobs worth 25/26k a year and i also want this role to contribute to my experience.

additionally, when i finish college i am going to do my PRINCE2 foundation (project management course) and complete the course later on. i havent decided whether i would like to do a degree yet.

has anyone got any answers to both of my questions??

i would be so greatful to ANYONE who could help me with any pharma / biotech related responses.

Univeristy Diploma and Some years Experience as PM to take PRINCE2 Exam?

I am looking into the Project Management certificate called, "PRINCE2."

Now, in the US, there is a PM certificate called PMP. To take this exam, we need university diploma and some years experience as PM.

Does anybody know if PRINCE2 requires univeristy diploma and some years experience as PM to take the PRINCE2 exam?

PMP is not just a US certification. It is a world certification based on the information found in the PMBOK book.

To become a PMP, if you have a Bachelors degree, you need 4500 hours of project management accrediation and a minimum of 36 months of experience working as a project manager or as part of a project team.
You also need 35 hours of training from an accredited source and to pass the PMP exam.

To become PRINCE2 certified, you only need to complete an accredited PRINCE2 Practioner blended learning course or a PRINCE 2 Practioner classroom course and then need to pass the PRINCE2 exam.

If you have a degree and 3 years / 4500 hours of Project Management experience, I highly recommend going for your PMP certification.

Addressing Project Failure

This shows ways in which project failure can be addressed at the highest level. We need to know the what’s, why’s and how’s etc with any undertaking…
The first few lines from a poem by Kipling sums this up nicely – ‘I keep six honest serving men, they taught me all I knew, their names are What & Why & When and Where & How & Who’. The spirit of this poem is wrapped up in the Project Initiation Documentation, known as the PID, which will become the main source of management information, and the baseline for the project. The PID essentially becomes a contract between the Project Manager and the Project Board and should hold sufficient detail to encourage the Project Board to take ownership for the project. After all, the Project Board are the ‘owners’ of the project.
